Wondering What You Can Do This Summer? Volunteer!

Summer is a time of many changes; PCS season, schools are out, and days are longer. This summer presents additional challenges with COVID-19 distancing rules and lots of familiar fun spots closed.  Planning for staying occupied over the summer can seem difficult, but why not volunteer?

This is the perfect opportunity to take the time to volunteer. Volunteering can be done in person or virtually. Each installation has information on a variety of programs that are looking for volunteers for the summer months. What are some of the benefits of including some volunteer time in your summer planning?

Make new friends

Are you new to your installation? Have you been at your installation for a while, but are having trouble meeting new friends? With some of the social distancing rules starting to relax, consider an in person volunteer opportunity. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people. Volunteering will get you active and if you share your desire to meet other people with your installation volunteer coordinator, they can provide you with volunteer opportunities that will include working with groups of people. It is a fantastic way to meet potential friends and get to know the people aboard your installation and in the surrounding community. Many of the opportunities are in support of assisting families struggling with food insecurity during our harsh economic period. Food banks are one of the most present requests for volunteers.

Find out what's going on in your community

Do you feel like you always hear about the fun summer events happening in your community after they’ve happened? Volunteer to get the inside scoop! Volunteering is the best way to stay abreast of community events and even participate to make them a success. Planning for installation and community events starts weeks, sometimes months, ahead and most events are looking for people to help. Talk with your volunteer Coordinator to find out what’s happening near you and what you can do in person or virtually to support the event.

Help out the kids in your community

Do you enjoy making a difference in the life of a child? Volunteer! Your installation Youth Sports Program is always in need of coaches and volunteers to make their sporting events successful. Volunteering to participate gives you the benefit of taking part, but also ensures that the families aboard your installation have an outstanding sports program. Volunteers really make a difference in the opportunities available for kids, so volunteer!

Break the monotony as you help from home

A lot of families are concerned about leaving the safety of their own home. We’ve got an answer for you: Virtual Volunteering! It can assist you and your family with passing the summer hours and give back both locally and globally. There are so many opportunities available that fit all different types of interests. Of course, as you’re volunteering you and your family are skill building as well. It is truly a win all around.

There are many great reasons to volunteer at your installation this summer. This list is just a beginning.  The reasons benefit you, your installation, and your community. Don't hesitate. Reach out to your installation Volunteer Coordinator for summer opportunities today.
